Buying Guide

Common Rear Shock Parts

Rear shocks are simpler than forks in some ways, but they still have wear items that need periodic replacement. Knowing what’s available helps you maintain your shock between full professional services.

Mounting Hardware and Bushings

The most frequently replaced rear shock parts. The DU bushings that sit inside the mounting eyes wear over time, causing knocking and imprecise damping. Replacement kits from Fox, RockShox and aftermarket suppliers like Burgtec and Huber Bushings are straightforward to fit with a bushing press or a vice and socket set. Size is specified by the shock eye internal diameter and the bolt diameter of your frame — measure before ordering.

Air Can Seals and Service Kits

For air shocks, the air can seal kit is the most common DIY service. These kits include the O-rings, seals and grease needed to restore an air shock that’s losing pressure. Fox, RockShox and Cane Creek all sell model-specific kits. This is a 20-minute job with basic tools and a shock pump.

Coil Springs

If you’ve bought a coil shock with the wrong spring rate, or your weight has changed, replacement springs are widely available. Sold by rate (e.g. 400lb, 450lb, 500lb) and length. Sprindex makes a variable-rate spring that covers a range of rates in one unit — useful if you’re not sure exactly what rate you need.

Volume Spacers

Small plastic tokens that change the progressivity of air shocks. Adding spacers makes the shock ramp up faster towards the end of travel, preventing harsh bottom-outs without needing to run higher overall pressure. Fox uses grey plastic tokens, RockShox uses Bottomless Tokens. Both are cheap and easy to install during an air can service.
