Coil Shock Buying Guide
Coil shocks use a metal spring instead of air pressure to support the rider’s weight. They’re heavier than air shocks but offer a level of consistency and sensitivity that air struggles to match, especially on long descents and rough terrain.
Why Coil?
- Consistency: Coil springs don’t heat up and lose performance on long descents. The shock feels the same on the last run as the first.
- Small-bump sensitivity: Lower static friction than an air spring means the shock reacts to small bumps and roots that an air shock might skip over.
- Durability: Fewer seals, no air can to leak. Coil shocks need less frequent servicing.
- The feel: Riders who’ve switched from air to coil consistently describe it as more “plush” and “connected”. It’s subjective, but the preference is real.
Spring Rates
The spring rate (measured in lb/in) must match your weight and the frame’s leverage ratio. Too soft and you’ll bottom out constantly. Too firm and the shock won’t use its full travel. Most manufacturers publish spring rate charts — use these as a starting point and adjust from there.
Springs are cheap and easy to swap, so buying a used coil shock with the wrong spring weight isn’t a dealbreaker. A new spring from Sprindex, Fox or RockShox costs £20–£60.
