Rigid Fork Buying Guide

Rigid forks aren’t just for budget builds. Lightweight carbon rigid forks are the go-to choice for XC racers chasing every gram, bikepackers who need rack mounts and reliability, and anyone building a gravel or adventure bike that still needs to handle off-road.

Why Go Rigid?

  • Weight: A carbon rigid fork can weigh under 500g. That’s over a kilo saved versus a suspension fork.
  • Maintenance: Nothing to service. No seals, no oil, no air pressure to check.
  • Rack and mudguard mounts: Most rigid forks have brazed-on mounts for racks, mudguards and anything-cages. Essential for bikepacking.
  • Efficiency: Zero energy lost to suspension bob. Every watt goes to the rear wheel.

Materials

  • Carbon fibre: Lightest option. Good carbon forks have some built-in compliance to take the edge off rough surfaces. Look for a tapered steerer for frame compatibility.
  • Chromoly steel: Classic choice. Heavier than carbon but absorbs vibration naturally and is easy to repair if damaged. Surly, Cotic and Jones all make excellent steel rigid forks.
  • Aluminium: Stiff and cheap but transmits vibration directly. Fine for commuters and town bikes, less pleasant on rough trails.

What to Check

  • Axle-to-crown length: This determines how the fork affects your bike’s geometry. If you’re replacing a suspension fork with a rigid one, look for a “suspension-corrected” rigid fork that matches the axle-to-crown length of the original.
  • Axle standard: Boost 110x15mm thru-axle, non-Boost 100x15mm, or QR 9mm. Match your hub.
  • Steerer type and length: Tapered or straight. Make sure there’s enough steerer length to fit your headset and stem stack.
