Why run a rigid fork instead of suspension?

Rigid forks aren't just for budget builds. A carbon rigid fork can weigh under 500g, over a kilo saved against a suspension fork, and there's nothing to service — no seals, no oil, no air pressure to check and no service parts to source. Most rigid forks carry brazed-on mounts for racks, mudguards and anything-cages, which makes them essential for bikepacking, and with zero energy lost to suspension bob every watt goes to the rear wheel. That suits XC racers chasing every gram and gravel or adventure builds that still need to handle off-road.

Carbon, steel or aluminium?

Carbon fibre is the lightest option, and good carbon forks have some built-in compliance to take the edge off rough surfaces. Chromoly steel is the classic choice — heavier than carbon, but it absorbs vibration naturally and is easy to repair if damaged, with Surly, Cotic and Jones all making excellent steel rigid forks. Aluminium is stiff and cheap but transmits vibration directly, which is fine for commuters and town bikes and less pleasant on rough trails.

What axle-to-crown length do I need?

Axle-to-crown length determines how the fork affects your bike's geometry. If you're replacing a suspension fork with a rigid one, look for a "suspension-corrected" rigid fork that matches the axle-to-crown length of the original.

Which axle standard fits my hub?

Match the fork to the hub you already have: Boost 110x15mm thru-axle, non-Boost 100x15mm, or 9mm QR. The same standards run across the rest of the MTB fork range, so a fork that fits one of your bikes will usually fit another with the same front hub.

Tapered or straight steerer?

Steerers come tapered or straight, so check which your frame and headset take. Make sure there's enough steerer length to fit your headset and stem stack as well — a used fork may already have been cut down for a previous owner's bike.
