Which bottom bracket removal tool fits my bike?
Count the engagement points on the cup. Removal tools or bottom bracket spanners?
They do different halves of the same job. The removal tool is the interface that matches the cup pattern, and most are sockets needing a 1/2in drive or a 32mm spanner across the flats to turn them. Buy the socket first and turn it with a breaker bar you already own.
Can I get a press-fit bottom bracket out with these?
Out, yes — in, no. A press-fit removal tool is a stepped drift or an expanding collet that passes through the shell, catches the far bearing's inner lip and is hit with a hammer, and it is a genuinely destructive operation for the bearing you are removing. Installation needs a press, because knocking a new cup in with a mallet cracks the plastic sleeve or seats it crooked, which is the usual cause of a bottom bracket that creaks two rides later.
What should I check on a used bottom bracket tool?
Look at the notches or splines under a light: a socket that has slipped shows flattened, shiny corners and slight burring, and once it is rounded it will slip again on the cup you need it for. Check the 1/2in drive square is not chewed and, on external sockets, that the wall between the notches has not cracked — the thin-wall types are the ones that split. Many external sockets have a centring boss or a plastic guide that keeps them square on the cup; sellers lose these, and without it the tool wanders. On drifts and punches, a mushroomed head is a safety problem as well as a worn one, and flaking chrome plating on any of them is cosmetic.
What is a fair used price?
These are cast or forged steel tools with no moving parts, used a handful of times per bike, so a well-kept one is nearly as good as new and around half the price is reasonable. It is worth paying for a used branded tool rather than a new unbranded one, since soft cheap sockets round off on their first properly tight cup and then damage the cup as well. Buy new only when the pattern you need is a current standard nobody is selling on, or when the used tool's splines already show wear — and check the wider bottom bracket tools listings, since these often come up as sets.
