Which bottom bracket tool fits my bike?
Work out the standard before you buy anything. Threaded shells — BSA at 68 or 73mm, Italian, or T47 — take external cups that a splined spanner engages. Count the notches and check the diameter: a 16-notch 44mm tool covers most Shimano external cups, while other makers use their own patterns, and a tool that nearly fits will shear the notches off an alloy cup. How do these differ from ordinary hand tools?
A bottom bracket tool is shape-specific rather than size-specific: it exists to grip a splined or notched interface no spanner can hold. That also means it cannot be substituted from your hand tools drawer, and no multi-tool carries one. Because BB cups torque to 35 to 50Nm, the socket-style tools that take a 1/2in drive are worth preferring — they let you fit a torque wrench instead of guessing with a hand-held version.
What wears out on used BB tools?
The splines are what fail. Look into the tool and check the driving faces are square and sharp; rounded or peened splines mean it has been used loose or on the wrong standard, and it will slip and damage the cup it is meant to remove. On socket types, check the 1/2in drive square is not chewed. Bearing presses need more attention: the threaded rod should turn smoothly along its whole length, the thrust bearing at the handle should spin freely rather than grinding, and the drift cups must be free of dents on the face that contacts the bearing. A bent press rod will push a bearing in crooked, which is worse than not pressing it at all. Check the removal drifts have not been mushroomed by hammer blows.
What should I pay, and when is new better?
These are simple steel tools with a long life, so a straight, sharp-splined used example is good value at roughly half to two thirds of new, and press kits sold complete with their full set of drifts are the ones worth chasing. An incomplete press kit is usually a false economy, because individual guides for a specific bearing size are awkward to source. Buy new when you cannot verify the spline pattern matches your cups, or when the tool shows any rounding — the tool is far cheaper than the crankset it will damage.
