Brake Sets
Brake sets — complete calliper assemblies — are the core braking component. Road rim callipers from Shimano (Dura-Ace, Ultegra, 105) use dual-pivot designs for strong, even braking. Disc brake callipers use flat-mount for road and post-mount adapters where needed. Shimano BR-R8000 Ultegra and SRAM Force callipers are the sweet spot for braking performance vs cost. Campagnolo Skeleton callipers are recognisable by their open design. Third-party callipers from TRP, Hope, and Juin Tech offer alternatives for specific builds.

Road Brake Set Buying Guide
Rim Brake Callipers
Shimano dual-pivot callipers are the benchmark. Dura-Ace BR-R9100 is the lightest and stiffest, Ultegra BR-R8000 is functionally identical with slight weight penalty, 105 BR-R7000 adds a few more grams but brakes identically. All three use the same pad compound and adjustment mechanism. Campagnolo Skeleton callipers use an open design that saves weight but fits fewer rim profiles. Direct-mount callipers (bolting directly to the frame rather than through a hole) offer stiffer braking on frames designed for them. EE Brakes and TRP R879 are premium third-party options favoured by weight-conscious riders.
Disc Brake Callipers
Flat-mount is the road disc standard — callipers bolt directly to frame and fork flat-mount tabs. Shimano BR-R8070 (Ultegra) and BR-R7070 (105) are the volume sellers — reliable, powerful, and well-supported. SRAM Force AXS callipers use a different lever pull ratio and aren't cross-compatible with Shimano levers. Hope RX4 offers four-piston stopping power for heavier riders or steep descents. Post-mount to flat-mount adapters exist for older frames. Two-piston callipers are standard for road; four-piston adds power at the expense of weight.
Buying Used
Rim callipers: check the pivot bolt isn't seized and the calliper springs back evenly. Pad holders should grip pads firmly. Disc callipers: check pistons extend and retract evenly (press the lever while watching). Contaminated pistons cause uneven braking and squealing. Verify the calliper includes all mounting hardware — flat-mount bolts and adapters are specific to frame/fork designs. Brake fluid (mineral oil for Shimano/Campagnolo, DOT fluid for SRAM/Hope) should be clean — dark or discoloured fluid needs replacing.
