Rear Wheel Buying Guide
The rear wheel is the more complex of the two — it needs the right hub spacing, freehub type, wheel size and spoke count to work with your frame and drivetrain. It also takes more abuse than the front, so quality matters here.
Freehub Compatibility
This is the most critical spec. Shimano HG (Hyperglide) fits Shimano 10/11-speed and SRAM 10/11-speed cassettes. SRAM XD (XDR) is required for SRAM 12-speed Eagle cassettes. Shimano Micro Spline is required for Shimano 12-speed cassettes. If you're buying a used rear wheel, confirm the freehub type before anything else. Some hubs (Hope, DT Swiss, Industry Nine) have swappable freehub bodies — check if the hub you're buying has options.
Hub Engagement
Engagement refers to how quickly the freehub catches and drives the wheel when you start pedalling. Measured in degrees of rotation before engagement. DT Swiss 18T star ratchet has 20° engagement (serviceable, reliable). DT Swiss 54T upgrade drops to 6.7°. Hope Pro 4 offers 5° engagement with a 44-tooth ratchet ring. Industry Nine Hydra has 0.52° (690 points of engagement). Faster engagement matters for technical climbing where you need instant power delivery after a ratchet. For general trail riding, anything under 10° feels responsive.
Spoke Count and Pattern
28-spoke rear wheels are common on trail and XC builds — lighter, slightly more aerodynamic. 32-spoke wheels are standard for enduro, DH and heavier riders — stronger, stiffer, more durable. If you regularly break spokes or ride aggressively on rocky terrain, 32-spoke is the safer choice. A lost spoke on a 28-spoke wheel causes more deflection and is harder to ride home on than a lost spoke on a 32-spoke wheel.
