Brake Set Buying Guide
Buying a complete brake set (lever + caliper + hose + pads) is the simplest path to better braking. Everything is matched and pre-bled, avoiding the compatibility minefield of mixing parts. For a full bike build or a meaningful brake upgrade, a complete set is almost always the right move.
Popular Brake Sets
Shimano Deore M6100 is the value benchmark — 2-piston calipers with excellent power for the price. Shimano SLX M7100 adds servo-wave lever action and better pad compound. Shimano XT M8100 is the sweet spot — 4-piston option, refined lever feel, and tool-free reach and contact point adjust. SRAM Code RSC and Code R are the go-to for gravity riding — massive power and excellent heat management with 4-piston calipers. Hope Tech 4 E4 and V4 are the enthusiast's choice — hand-built, fully serviceable, available in every anodised colour imaginable.
2-Piston vs 4-Piston
2-piston calipers are lighter and sufficient for XC, trail and most enduro riding. 4-piston calipers provide more pad area and power — they're the standard for aggressive enduro, DH and e-MTB where braking loads are higher and rotors run hotter. If you're consistently overheating your 2-piston brakes on long alpine descents, 4-piston is the upgrade to make. For UK trail centres and typical trail riding, 2-piston Shimano SLX or XT is more than enough.
Buying Used Brake Sets
Used brake sets are excellent value. Calipers and levers are robust — the wear items are pads and rotors, which are cheap to replace. When buying used, ask if the brakes have been bled recently and check for lever feel. A spongy lever or one that pulls to the bar just needs a bleed — not a reason to avoid the deal, but factor in the cost of a bleed kit (£15-20) or a shop bleed (£20-30 per brake).
