Torque Screwdrivers

Preset or adjustable?

A preset driver is fixed at one figure — 5Nm is the common one, since it covers a large share of stem and seatpost bolts — and cannot drift out of adjustment because there is nothing to adjust. An adjustable driver lets you dial anywhere in its range, which you need if your bike mixes 4Nm faceplate bolts with 6Nm rotor bolts. Preset tools like the Ritchey Torqkey and Topeak Nano TorqBox are small enough to travel; adjustable ones like the Wera Click-Torque series and Park Tool ATD-1.2 stay on the bench. Some preset drivers step through a few fixed values rather than one, which is a reasonable middle ground.

Why not just use a torque wrench?

A torque wrench reading to 60Nm cannot resolve 4Nm with any confidence, because accuracy is quoted as a percentage of the reading and the bottom of the scale is the least reliable part of it. The screwdriver's short handle also stops you generating force you should not be applying: it is hard to badly overtighten a bolt through a palm grip. The wrench remains the right tool for cassettes, bottom brackets and cranks. Both live under torque tools, and most home workshops end up with one of each.

What should I inspect before buying used?

Check the bits first, because they are what touches the bolt and they are frequently the worn part. A rounded 4mm hex or a chipped T25 will slip in the head and round the fastener, and a driver sold without its original bit set is worth much less. On adjustable models, run the collar the full length of the scale feeling for grit or stiffness, and confirm the lock holds the setting rather than creeping when you grip the handle. The click should be crisp. On preset models there is no adjustment to test, so ask about age and use: the spring in a well-used one softens over years, and there is no way to correct it. Look for a cracked handle shell, which usually means it has been used as a general driver at torques it was never meant to see.

Is a used one good value?

Preset drivers are cheap new and hold their calibration well, so a used one only makes sense at a genuine discount with a complete bit set. Adjustable drivers cost enough new that a well-kept used example is worth having, and a full bit range with the case is a large part of the value. Buy new if you are torquing an expensive carbon cockpit and want the stated accuracy figure to mean something, or if the used tool arrives with mismatched bits — replacing those individually often costs more than the tool did.
