What makes a multi-tool comprehensive rather than compact?
The chain breaker is the dividing line. Once a tool carries a chain tool it needs a longer body and a threaded driver pin, which pushes it past about 150g and gives room for the extras that follow — 3.2mm, 3.3mm and 3.45mm spoke keys, a T25 for rotor and brake bolts, a flat and Phillips driver, sometimes a tyre lever or a valve core tool. Do I need this or a compact multi-tool?
It depends on how far you are from the car. A road rider on a 40km loop is usually better served by a 60 to 100g compact multi-tool that lives in a jersey pocket and covers the 4, 5 and 6mm bolts. The comprehensive tool earns its weight on a long trail ride or a tour, where a chain repair, a broken spoke or a loose rotor bolt is a genuine possibility and there is no shop. Plenty of riders own both and pick by ride length.
Which functions actually get used?
4mm, 5mm and T25 do most of the work on a modern bike — stem, seatpost clamp, bottle cages, rotor bolts and disc calipers. The 6mm turns up on crank bolts and some seat clamps, and the 8mm, where fitted, is for pedal axles and older cranks. The chain tool and spoke keys may go unused for years and then save an afternoon. Functions worth ignoring in the count: the bottle opener, the box spanner sizes nothing on your bike uses, and second Phillips heads.
What wears out on a used multi-tool?
Check the 4mm and 5mm bits first, since they take the most abuse — look end-on for rounded corners or a twisted flat, because a rounded bit will round the bolt it goes into. Then the chain tool: the driver pin should turn smoothly and sit square, and a pin that is bent, blunted or missing makes the whole tool half of what you paid for, as many are not replaceable. Sight along the side plates to see the pivot bolt is tight enough that a bit will not fold under load but loose enough to swing, and count the bits against the maker's function list, because tools that have lived in a wet saddlebag lose the small ones and rust at the pivot.
What should I pay, and when is new better?
A used comprehensive tool in good order usually goes for roughly half of new, which is fair given the steel is the only part that matters and it is mostly unloaded. Buy new if the bits show wear, if the chain tool pin is damaged, or if the tool predates Torx — an older 15-function tool with no T25 will not touch a disc rotor bolt. Anything sold as untested from a house clearance is worth a look at the other multi-tools listed before you commit.
