What does a bike protectant spray actually do?

It leaves a water-repellent film on painted and bare metal surfaces after washing, so salt and grit have less to hold onto and the next clean takes less scrubbing. Silicone and PTFE aerosols such as Muc-Off Bike Protect and GT85 flash off to a light dry film and are the usual choice for a whole-bike spray-down; heavier anti-corrosion oils such as ACF-50 stay wet, creep into bolt heads and linkage pivots and are aimed at long-term storage rather than weekly use. Water-displacing sprays like WD-40 are a third thing again — they push moisture out of cables and electrical contacts but are not formulated to stay in place.

Is protectant spray the same as chain lube?

No, and treating one as the other costs you a drivetrain. A protectant is designed to spread thinly and shed water; chain lube is designed to stay in the roller and carry load. Spray a protectant across a chain and it thins the lube already in there, then flings off within a few miles, leaving a dry chain and a fine mist over the rim. Mask the cassette and chain before spraying, or spray onto a cloth and wipe the frame instead.

Protectant spray or frame polish?

Polish works on the clear coat — you apply it, cut back light marks and buff it off, and the result is cosmetic. A protectant is applied and left in place to do a job. The two are not alternatives: riders typically use frame polish a few times a year and a protectant after every wet ride, and both sit in the wider polishes and protectants range.

Where should you not spray it?

Keep it well away from brake rotors, pads and rim brake tracks. Silicone contamination glazes pad compound and usually means new pads plus a rotor clean with isopropyl alcohol, not a quick wipe. Saddles, bar tape, grips and tyre tread all become slippery too. If you are spraying anything near a braking surface, hold a piece of card between the can and the disc, or decant onto a cloth and wipe.

How long does a can last, and what should you pay?

A 500ml aerosol covers roughly 15 to 25 whole-bike applications if you are spraying the frame, forks and fasteners rather than soaking the bike, so a single can generally sees a commuter through a winter. Trigger-spray bottles and refill concentrates work out cheaper per application and give more control near the brakes; aerosols reach behind the bottom bracket and into the rear triangle more easily. Buying two small cans rarely beats one large one on price, and aerosols lose propellant pressure if stored half-used for years.
