Chainrings
Road chainrings come in standard (53/39), semi-compact (52/36), compact (50/34), and sub-compact (48/32) combinations. Compact 50/34 suits most riders — enough top-end for descents and low gears for climbing. 1x setups use a single chainring (38-44T) with a wide-range cassette. Shimano, SRAM, and Campagnolo use specific bolt patterns (BCD) and tooth profiles — chainrings must match your crankset. Aftermarket oval rings from Rotor, AbsoluteBLACK, and Wolf Tooth claim smoother power delivery through the dead spot in the pedal stroke.

Road Chainring Buying Guide
Gearing Combinations
Standard 53/39: pure racing gearing for strong riders on flat to rolling terrain. Semi-compact 52/36: the modern all-round choice — close to standard on top but significantly easier climbing gear. Compact 50/34: the default recommendation for most riders — covers everything from fast group rides to steep Alpine climbs. Sub-compact 48/32: for hilly areas or riders who prefer spinning. 1x single ring: typically 40-42T for road, 38-42T for gravel — simplicity at the cost of gear range. Your cassette choice (11-28 vs 11-34) affects the overall range as much as the chainring.
Compatibility
Shimano 4-bolt (110mm BCD asymmetric on R9100/R8000/R7000, direct mount on R9200/R8100/R7100) — chainrings must match the crankset generation. SRAM uses a direct-mount interface (1x and 2x specific). Campagnolo uses their own bolt pattern. Aftermarket chainrings from Rotor, AbsoluteBLACK, and Stronglight are made for specific crankset interfaces. When buying, verify: BCD or mount type, inner/outer ring, number of teeth, and speed compatibility. A 10-speed chainring tooth profile differs from 12-speed.
Buying Used
Inspect tooth profiles — worn chainring teeth develop a shark-fin shape (hooked on one side, flat on the other). New teeth are symmetrical. Worn chainrings skip under load and won't mesh with a new chain. Check mounting bolt holes for elongation. Aluminium rings wear faster than steel but are lighter. Chainrings are relatively cheap new, so only buy used if the teeth show minimal wear or for discontinued/hard-to-find sizes.
