Brake Levers

On road bikes, brake levers are integrated into the shifters — Shimano calls them STI levers, SRAM uses DoubleTap, Campagnolo uses Ergopower. These combined shift-brake levers are the single most expensive component in a groupset. Hood shape, reach adjustment, lever throw, and ergonomics vary significantly between brands. For time-trial bikes, dedicated brake levers mount on the aero bars. Bar-end and inline levers serve specific purposes on touring and cyclocross setups.

Road Brake Lever Buying Guide

Integrated Shift-Brake Levers

Modern road brake levers integrate shifting — you won't find separate brake levers on a standard road setup. Shimano STI levers use a combined brake lever (push inward to shift down) and a smaller inner lever (shift up). SRAM DoubleTap uses a single lever with two movements — short push to shift up, long push to shift down. Campagnolo Ergopower uses a thumb lever behind the brake lever for downshifts and a finger lever for upshifts. Each system has loyal users — ergonomic preference is genuinely personal.

Hood Shape and Ergonomics

Shimano hoods are the most compact — suited to smaller hands. SRAM hoods are bulkier, especially on hydraulic AXS levers — some riders with small hands find them too large. Campagnolo hoods are intermediate. Most modern levers offer reach adjustment via a screw or shim that moves the lever closer to or further from the bar. For riders with small hands, Shimano R7000/R8000/R9100 series offer the best reach range. Test hood comfort on a long ride before committing — you spend more time on the hoods than anywhere else.

Buying Used Levers

STI levers are precision mechanisms. Check both shift directions work cleanly through all gears. On hydraulic levers, squeeze the brake — it should feel firm, not spongy. Check the hood rubber for tears and hardening (replacement hoods cost £15-30). Inspect the lever pivot for play. Electronic levers (Di2, AXS, EPS): verify they pair with their system and shift reliably on battery. Crashed levers often have bent or cracked internals that aren't visible — shift through every gear before buying. Campagnolo Ergopower levers from the 2000s era can develop a worn ratchet mechanism — test carefully.
