Park / Dirt Helmet Buying Guide
Park and dirt helmets use a classic skate-style half-shell shape — smooth exterior, low profile, minimal visor or no visor. They're the helmet of choice for dirt jumps, pump tracks, skateparks and street riding where a trail helmet's visor and extended rear would snag or look out of place.
Skate Style vs Trail Style
Park helmets have a rounder, smoother shell profile compared to trail helmets. The lack of extended rear coverage saves weight and allows more head movement. They sit lower on the forehead for a snug, secure feel at speed. The trade-off is less rear and temporal coverage — fine for dirt jumps and pump tracks, but a trail helmet offers more protection for fast descents on rough terrain.
Construction
Hard-shell park helmets use a thick ABS outer shell — heavier but extremely durable against repeated impacts from falls on concrete and transitions. In-mould helmets (like trail helmets) are lighter but less resistant to multiple hits. For park riding where you're falling regularly while learning tricks, a hard-shell helmet lasts significantly longer. Some premium options (Bell Local, Giro Quarter MIPS) combine hard-shell durability with MIPS rotational protection.
Certified vs Non-Certified
All helmets sold in the UK should meet EN 1078 or equivalent standards. Some park helmets are dual-certified for cycling and skateboarding (CPSC + ASTM). Dual certification is useful if you use the same helmet for BMX, skateboarding and dirt jumping. Non-certified novelty helmets exist — avoid them. A genuine safety certification is the minimum requirement.
