Ankle Pad Buying Guide
Ankle injuries from pedal strikes, crashes and awkward dismounts are common in mountain biking — especially on flat pedals where your feet aren't locked in. Ankle protection ranges from simple neoprene braces to armoured guards that cover the malleolus (ankle bone) and Achilles tendon.
Types of Ankle Protection
Neoprene braces (Fuse Alpha, Leatt AirFlex) provide compression support and some impact absorption — they're low-profile enough to fit inside shoes and reduce the severity of twists and rolls. Armoured ankle guards (Shadow Conspiracy Super Slim, Fuse Echo) add a hard shell over the ankle bones — more protective but bulkier and may not fit inside all shoes. Some riders layer a neoprene brace under a high-top shoe for combined support and coverage.
When You Need Them
Flat pedal riders are most at risk — a slipped pedal drives metal pins directly into the ankle bone, and there's nothing between your foot and the ground in a crash. DH riders benefit from ankle protection because of the speed and severity of impacts. Riders recovering from previous ankle injuries often wear braces to prevent re-injury. If you find yourself consistently bruising your ankles, ankle guards are cheaper and less painful than repeated injuries.
Compatibility with Shoes
Thin braces fit inside most MTB shoes without issues. Armoured guards may require a looser-fitting shoe or a shoe with a higher cuff. Five Ten Freerider Pro Mid and Ride Concepts Wildcat Mid are popular mid-top shoes that provide ankle coverage without needing separate ankle guards — worth considering if you want a simpler setup.
