What defines a trail frame?
Trail frames are designed for 120–150mm of rear travel with balanced geometry — head angles around 64–66°, moderate reach, and enough room for a water bottle. They accept standard trail forks (130–160mm) and run 29" or 27.5" wheels. The best trail frames balance pedalling efficiency with descending confidence without going full enduro.
Linkage types
Four-bar (Horst link), single-pivot, VPP, DW-Link, Flex Stay — every brand has their own suspension design. They all work well on modern frames. What matters more is the leverage curve and anti-squat tuning. Bikes like the Specialized Stumpjumper (FSR), Santa Cruz Hightower (VPP), and Yeti SB130 (Switch Infinity) use different systems but all ride brilliantly. Don't pick a frame based on linkage marketing — pick it based on geometry, size, and feel.
What shock fits?
Check the eye-to-eye length and stroke before buying. Common trail frame shock sizes are 210x55mm, 230x60mm, and 230x65mm, but there's huge variation. Some frames are metric-only (Trunnion mount), others use standard eyelet mounts. Make sure you know exactly what shock the frame takes before committing — a wrong-sized shock is useless.
Frame sizing and geometry
Compare reach numbers, not S/M/L labels. A "Large" from one brand can have 20mm more reach than another. Modern trail bikes tend toward longer reach and shorter stems (35–50mm) for stability. If you're building up from a frame, you get to choose your own stem length to fine-tune the fit — one of the big advantages of a custom build.
What to check buying used
Full-suspension trail frames see a lot of miles. Check every pivot bearing for play, inspect the shock mount hardware, and look for cracks around the head tube and chainstay junction. Ask about the frame's age and how many hours the bearings have done. Budget for a bearing kit (£50–100) if the seller can't confirm they're fresh.
