Buying Guide

Steel vs aluminium vs carbon

This matters more on hardtails than any other frame type because there's no rear suspension to mask the ride quality. Steel (chromoly 4130) hardtails from Cotic, Stanton, Chromag, and Surly have a smooth, compliant ride — the frame flexes slightly and absorbs trail chatter. They're durable, repairable, and ride beautifully. Aluminium hardtails are lighter and stiffer — more responsive but harsher on rough terrain. Carbon hardtails are the lightest option but a niche choice — most hardtail riders value durability and simplicity over weight savings.

Trail hardtail vs XC hardtail frames

Trail hardtail frames have slack geometry (65–67° head angle), room for 130–140mm forks, and aggressive riding positions. They're designed for proper trail riding — think Nukeproof Scout, Ragley Big Al, Orange Clockwork. XC hardtail frames are steeper, lighter, and designed for 100mm forks and racing. Different tools for different jobs — make sure the frame's geometry matches how you ride.

Fork compatibility

Match the fork travel to what the frame was designed for. A trail hardtail designed for 130mm will handle a 140mm fork fine but putting a 160mm fork on it will slacken the geometry beyond what works. Check the head tube standard (tapered 44/56mm is most common on modern frames) and axle spacing (Boost 110x15mm front is now standard). Older frames may use non-Boost spacing, which limits fork and wheel choices.

Why build a hardtail from a frame?

Hardtails are the easiest mountain bikes to build. No shock to spec, no pivots to align, fewer compatibility questions. A frame, fork, wheelset, bars, and drivetrain — you can build one in an evening. It's also the cheapest way into a quality mountain bike. A used steel frame with a decent fork and solid components makes an incredibly capable bike for well under £1000.

What to check buying used

Without rear suspension, hardtail frames take more direct impact. Check the downtube for dents (aluminium) or cracks (carbon/steel welds). Inspect the head tube and bottom bracket shell. Steel frames can rust internally — ask if the frame has been treated with something like Waxoyl or ACF50. On aluminium frames, check the welds around the head tube and seat tube junction. Derailleur hanger alignment is worth checking — a bent hanger causes ghost shifting.
