What makes a frame "enduro"?
Enduro frames are built to take a beating. Slack head angles (63–65°), long wheelbases, 150–180mm of rear travel, and reinforced high-impact zones. They're heavier than trail frames but more confidence-inspiring when the gradient tips and the trail gets rough. The geometry is biased toward descending — you sacrifice some climbing efficiency for genuine downhill speed.
Aluminium vs carbon for enduro
This is where aluminium makes the strongest case. Enduro frames get battered by rocks, crashes, and general abuse. Alloy is easier to inspect for damage, more resistant to point impacts, and cheaper to replace when the inevitable happens. Carbon enduro frames from Santa Cruz, Specialized, and Canyon are lighter and stiffer, but inspect them very carefully when buying used — a hairline crack on a carbon enduro frame isn't always visible.
Shock compatibility
Enduro frames commonly use 230x65mm or 250x75mm shocks, often with Trunnion mounts. Many modern enduro frames are designed around specific shocks — check whether the frame accepts both coil and air. Some frames have clearance issues with coil shocks or don't work well with certain piggyback reservoirs. Always confirm the exact shock spec with the seller.
What to check buying used
Enduro frames get ridden hard. Pivot bearings are the first thing to check — grab the rear triangle and rock it. Inspect the shock mount, head tube welds, and chainstay for cracks. Look at the downtube for rock strikes — deep gouges on carbon are a red flag. Ask about crash history honestly. Derailleur hangers should be straight or you'll have shifting problems from day one. A replacement hanger is cheap but tells you the frame has taken hits.
