Buying Guide

What is a fat bike?

Fat bikes use oversized tyres (3.8–5") on wide rims to float over soft surfaces. Originally designed for riding snow in Alaska, they've found a home in the UK for winter trail riding, beach riding, and just going places other bikes can't. The massive tyre volume provides natural suspension and grip on practically anything.

Do fat bikes make sense in the UK?

More than you'd think. British winters turn trails into bogs — fat bikes handle mud, wet roots, and saturated ground far better than standard MTBs. They're popular for winter riding when you don't want to trash your main bike. Some riders use them year-round for the sheer fun factor. They're slower on hardpack but unstoppable when it gets messy.

Rigid vs suspension

Most fat bikes are rigid — the massive tyres provide enough cushioning for moderate terrain. Run them at 5–8 PSI and they soak up a lot. Suspension forks like the Manitou Mastodon or RockShox Bluto exist for rougher riding but add weight and cost. For UK use, rigid is fine unless you're doing proper trail centre days on the fat bike.

Tyre pressure matters

Fat bike performance lives and dies by tyre pressure. Too high and you lose all the grip and float advantage. Most riders run 5–10 PSI depending on terrain and rider weight — dramatically lower than any other bike. A quality track pump with a low-pressure gauge is essential. Tubeless setup is highly recommended to avoid pinch flats at these pressures.

What to check buying used

Fat bike-specific parts can be harder to source. Check the bottom bracket shell width (typically 100mm or 120mm — not standard), hub spacing (170/177mm rear, 135/150mm front), and tyre condition. Fat bike tyres are expensive to replace. Inspect the rims for dents and check that the wheels spin true. The drivetrain and brakes are standard MTB — no surprises there.
