Buying Guide

What is a dirt jump bike?

Dirt jump bikes are hardtails with 80–100mm forks, 26" wheels, single-speed drivetrains, and compact geometry. They're designed to be thrown around in the air — pump tracks, jump lines, slopestyle, and street. Everything is kept simple and strong. No gears to break, no rear suspension to maintain, no unnecessary weight.

What size wheels?

Traditionally 26" — and most DJ bikes still are. The smaller wheels are stronger for the constant impacts of landing jumps and more manoeuvrable for tricks. A few modern DJ bikes have moved to 27.5" for extra rollover speed, but 26" remains the standard and gives you the widest tyre and wheel choice.

What fork travel?

80–100mm is standard. You don't need or want more — a DJ fork needs to be stiff and responsive for pumping and absorbing landings, not plush. Popular choices are the RockShox Pike DJ, Fox 36 831, and Manitou Circus. Make sure the fork has a firm compression tune — a trail fork bolted onto a DJ frame will feel vague.

Chromoly vs aluminium

Chromoly steel frames (4130 crmo) are the traditional choice — they flex slightly, absorb vibration, and are easy to repair. Aluminium frames are stiffer and lighter. Both work well. Chromoly is generally preferred for street riding where you're grinding and dropping off things. Aluminium is fine for pure dirt jumping. Either way, DJ frames are built tough.

What to check buying used

DJ bikes are ridden hard but they're simple machines. Check the headset for play, squeeze the brake (one rear brake is standard — check the pads and rotor), and spin the cranks to check the bottom bracket. Inspect the frame welds and around the head tube for cracks. Forks should compress and rebound smoothly without any clunking. Wheels should be true with no cracked rims from heavy landings.
