Trousers

MTB trousers split into two categories: technical riding trousers designed for the bike, and casual trousers from MTB brands for everyday wear. Riding trousers from Fox, Endura, and Troy Lee use stretch fabrics, articulated knees, and DWR coatings. Casual options from the same brands use the same robust construction in more conventional cuts. For UK riding, full-length trousers with water resistance are the default from October to April.

MTB Trouser Buying Guide

Riding Trousers

Technical riding trousers use four-way stretch fabric with DWR (durable water repellent) coating. Fox Ranger and Defend trousers are the go-to trail options — articulated knees fit over pads, and tapered ankles stay clear of cranks. Endura MT500 trousers are the UK benchmark for waterproof riding — proper seam sealing, not just a spray coating. Troy Lee Designs Sprint trousers are popular for DH with a looser moto-influenced cut. For cold, wet UK winters, lined waterproof trousers from Endura or 7mesh justify the premium.

Casual Trousers

Fox, Fasthouse, and Dakine make casual trousers that wouldn't look out of place off the bike but use tougher fabrics than high-street chinos. These typically feature stretch panels, reinforced seat areas, and discreet pockets for phones. They work for commuting to the trails and don't need changing at the car park. Chromag produces workshop-style trousers in heavy canvas that crossover between riding and everyday wear.

Fit Over Pads

If you ride with knee pads, trouser fit at the knee matters. Articulated or pre-shaped knees accommodate slim pads (POC VPD, Leatt Airflex). Baggy DH-cut trousers work with bulkier hard-shell pads. Straight-cut casual trousers usually don't work over pads — the bunching affects pedalling. Try your trouser-pad combination before committing, or buy trousers specifically marketed as pad-compatible.

Buying Used

Check the DWR coating on riding trousers — pour water on the fabric and see if it beads. If it soaks straight in, the DWR is gone (re-proofing sprays like Nikwax TX.Direct can restore it). Examine the seat and inner thigh for wear from saddle abrasion. Check knees for permanent stretching from pads. Zip and velcro closures at the ankles should still function cleanly.
