Shorts
MTB shorts come in two forms: baggy over-shorts with built-in or separate liners, and slim-fit trail shorts that blend riding function with casual styling. Fox Ranger and Endura Hummvee are the volume sellers — proven, affordable, and available everywhere. At the premium end, Troy Lee Designs Skyline, Fasthouse Crossline, and 7mesh Glidepath use lighter fabrics and more refined cuts. The right shorts are the single biggest comfort upgrade you can make to your riding kit.

MTB Shorts Buying Guide
Baggy vs Slim
Baggy MTB shorts are the traditional style — a durable outer short over a padded liner. The outer uses tough nylon or polyester with DWR coating, and the liner provides the chamois padding. Fox Ranger, Endura Hummvee, and Troy Lee Designs Sprint are the classics. Slim-fit trail shorts sit closer to the leg and often skip the liner — brands like Fasthouse, Dharco, and Race Face make these. Slim shorts look more casual and work better with separate liner shorts you can wash independently.
Liner Shorts
Some MTB shorts include a liner with a chamois pad; others sell the liner separately. Separate liners are better — you can wash them after every ride while the outer shorts only need occasional cleaning. Endura Clickfast liners clip into Hummvee shorts. Most other brands use elasticated liners that aren't attached. The chamois pad matters less on MTB shorts than road because you're out of the saddle more, but for long XC rides a decent pad prevents soreness.
Length and Fit
MTB short length is measured by inseam. Most trail shorts are 12-14 inches — above the knee for pedalling clearance. DH and freeride shorts can run longer (14-16 inches) for more protection and a moto-inspired look. Waist fit varies: Fox uses a ratchet closure system, Endura uses hook-and-loop adjusters, most others use velcro or drawstring. An adjustable waist is essential because shorts shift during aggressive riding.
Features Worth Having
Zippered pockets keep your phone and keys secure on rough descents — cargo pockets without closures will dump your stuff. DWR coating sheds light rain and mud splashes. Stretch panels in the waistband and inner thigh allow full pedalling range. Reinforced seat panels resist saddle abrasion. Ventilation zips on the thighs help on hot days. Avoid shorts with excessive velcro — it catches on saddles and seat packs.
Buying Used
MTB shorts take a beating so inspect carefully. Check the seat and inner thighs for thinning fabric from saddle wear — hold the material up to light. Verify all zips work smoothly. DWR coating can be re-applied with Nikwax sprays. Liner chamois pads flatten with use; if the liner is shot, buy the shorts for the outer and replace the liner separately. Ratchet waist closures (Fox) can strip — test they ratchet and release cleanly.
