Chest strap or optical armband?

A chest strap reads the electrical signal of the heartbeat and gives you the beat-to-beat accuracy that interval work and heart rate variability need. An optical sensor shines light through the skin and infers pulse from blood flow, which lags a few seconds behind a sharp change in effort and can lose the reading in cold weather. Armbands are more comfortable and easier to put on, so they suit steady riding, while a strap is what you want for structured intervals. Will it pair with your bike computer or phone?

Check the protocols before anything else. Most head units listen on ANT+, phones and watches use Bluetooth, and dual-band straps such as the Garmin HRM-Dual and Polar H10 broadcast both at once. That matters because a Bluetooth-only sensor usually pairs to one device at a time, so recording on your computer or GPS can lock out a training app on your phone. Older strap models tied to a single brand's proprietary signal are the ones to avoid.

How does a strap compare with the sensor in a smart watch?

Wrist-based optical sensors have the hardest job on a bike: the wrist is bent, the tendons move under the sensor, the bars transmit vibration and cold fingers reduce blood flow. Readings drift high on rough surfaces and lag on sprints. Many riders keep a smart watch for daily wear and pair a strap to it for rides, which is why straps and watches are usually bought together rather than as alternatives.

What should you check on a used heart rate monitor?

The strap is the consumable, the pod is not. Fabric straps lose their stretch after a couple of years and start slipping down the ribs mid-ride, and the conductive electrode panels stiffen and stop making contact, which produces spikes into the 200s in the first ten minutes. Check the popper studs for corrosion and the pod's battery hatch for a clean gasket, all its screws and no green residue inside from a leaked cell. A CR2032 typically gives around a year of regular use, so a flat battery says nothing about condition. On an armband, ask whether the built-in rechargeable cell still holds a full session, and look at the charging contacts for pitting.

What is a fair used price, and when should you buy new?

Chest strap pods are among the best used buys in cycling electronics: nothing wears inside them, and a working dual-band pod at around half of new is sound value even if you replace the strap. Replacement straps are sold separately and cheaply, so a listing with a tired strap and a good pod is worth pursuing. Buy new where the seller cannot confirm the readings are stable, and for optical armbands, where a degraded battery cannot be replaced without opening a sealed case.

Do you need one if you already have a power meter?

They measure different things and are usually run together. A power metre reports what you are putting into the pedals; heart rate reports what that effort is costing you, which is why the same 250W feels different in a heatwave, on the third day of a block or when you are coming down with something. Riders training to power still record heart rate to watch for fatigue, and riders without a power meter use heart rate zones as their main guide.
